What is a Wastewater Treatment Operator?

What Does a Wastewater Treatment Operator Do?

  

Working as part of a dedicated team Wastewater Treatment Operators support the successful operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant and facilities to deliver on business objectives and regulatory performance standards. Wastewater Treatment Operators must have a working knowledge of the operation, maintenance and cleaning of primary and secondary wastewater treatment equipment and facilities, wastewater treatment principles, safety rules, first aid, chemical handling, wastewater sampling and process control tests.

Basic Job Description

  • Operates treatment facilities to control flow and processing of wastewater, sludge, and effluent
  • Monitors gauges, meters, and control panels
  • Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings
  • Operates valves and gates either manually or by remote control
  • Starts and stops pump, engines, and generators to control and adjust flow and treat­ment processes
  • Maintains shift log and records meter and gauge read­ings
  • Collects samples and performs routine laboratory tests and analyses
  • Performs routine mainte­nance functions and custodial duties
  • Understands and carries out oral and written directions
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with others during the course of work

Certifications and training

 Wastewater Treatment Operators must have strong mathematical, mechanical and science skills. Operators must successfully pass wastewater operator certification examinations.  In order to apply for certification, prospective operators must have experience working in a wastewater treatment facility. 

Physical requirements

Wastewater Operators must be in good physical condition and be able to work outdoors in all types of weather.  They are required to work in constricted places and to reach, stoop, or bend to work on equipment.
